[Pann] How Do You Feel When You’re Called a “Cost-Free Daughter”?

Because my family wasn’t well-off, even on my birthdays, I’d pretend I didn’t want anything, even if I did. I used my older sister’s hand-me-downs without complaint. One day, my mom said, “You’re fine with anything, so there’s no need to spend much money on you.” In that moment, I felt tears welling up.

When I reacted, she brushed it off, saying, “Can’t I even joke? You’re too sensitive.” But honestly, isn’t that something to feel hurt about? Am I being immature?

1. I’d probably snap back, “Then you’ll be a cost-free mom too, right?

2. In that situation, a normal mother would feel sorry for her daughter and appreciate her sacrifices. Saying that you’re “fine with anything” is she just blurting out whatever comes to mind? If your family doesn’t treat you with value, don’t expect others to either. Make that clear.

3. The worst part is, after raising you with minimal cost, they still expect the same level of devotion as the child they actually invested in. And to that child, they feel guilty for not doing more, while from you, they expect even more in return. Don’t let them twist it into, “You chose not to ask for things, I didn’t neglect you.” The moment you start thinking about their struggles, they start seeing you as a pushover.

4. Your mom is gaslighting you to justify herself. Maybe she thinks of you as a high return, low investment daughter cost-effective and easy to raise. That’s a painful thought. You have every right to feel hurt. You’re not immature, so don’t blame yourself stand strong.

5. I completely understand how you feel because I was like that too. I held back my complaints and endured the hardships for my struggling mother’s sake. But instead of a “Thank you for your patience, my daughter”, I got, “You’re fine with anything.” It makes you wonder what all your sacrifices were for.
